Situated on the edge of the Caen plain and the Pays d'Auge, the commune of Troarn was, in its heyday, a stopover town on the road between Caen and Rouen. Today, while retaining its commercial and agricultural character, the former center is a green suburb on the outskirts of Caen, with a residential vocation. All around, it offers a landscape of marshes, a lowland of over 7,000 hectares, drained by a complex network of rivers (the Dives, the Muance) and canals. The tranquil town was massively damaged in the battle of 1944, with 65% of the village destroyed. It was not liberated until August 17, 1944.
