Located 66 kilometers from Wakayama, the Eight Peaks Ridge, which surrounds Mount Kōya (which is 958 meters high), is the place where the Kōya-san monasteries were established. Kōya is the name of the locality located in the heart of the mountains at an altitude of 900 meters, which in 2015 celebrated its 1200th anniversary. The plateau, covered with cedar, pine and cypress forests, houses the set of buildings that form the monastery. It was the priest Kūkai (774-835) who decided to build the first monastery of Kongōbu-ji in 816. His successor, Shinnen, continued the work by multiplying the buildings. These buildings could accommodate up to one hundred thousand people.
