The closest commune to Chalon-sur-Saône (Grand Chalon), Granges is located at the north-western gateway to the territory of the Communauté de Communes Sud Côte Chalonnaise. An extensive commune, over 1,000 hectares with a large part of preserved nature, and shared between a Bourg and several hamlets, the most important of which are Les Ponts and Les Curles.Granges sheltered men very early on. Archaeological work has allowed us to date cut flints found at the place called "La Sablière" to 150,000 years BC. Much later, around 30 BC, the Romans built their villas and developed the town, building a temple and, perhaps, a theatre. Granges owes its name to the fact that in the 6th century Queen Brunehaut gave this territory to the Abbey of Saint-Martin d'Autun, which established a priory and a storage place for grain. Moreover, cereal crops and cattle breeding continue to reign supreme over the landscape. Granges is known for its deciduous forest which extends over 92 hectares. Numerous walks and hikes on foot, horseback or mountain bike. Cycling also takes advantage of the Greenway crossing to head towards Buxy. Also to be seen, a pretty and peaceful wash-house at the place called La Boudoire (from "bouder" which means to overflow).
