Tsu City is the capital of Mie Prefecture. Historically, its ancient port, called Anotsu, played an important role in trade between Japan and China. The town was also a key stage on the pilgrimage route to Ise-jingū between the 14th and 16th centuries. A provincial governor, Oda Nobukane, installed a member of his family there in a castle in the 16th century. The Meiji era then saw the destruction of the fortress and the industrialisation of the town through textiles. With the replica of the castle, the Kitabatake Shrine completes Tsu's main tourist attraction.
