МЕЖДУРЕЧЕНСК. Nearly 100,000 inhabitants, 77 km east of Novokuznetsk. It came out of the ground in 1948: it was then a mining camp associated with Raspadskaya, the largest mine in Russia. The city is also the entry point of the Gornaya Shoria (Горная Шория), nicknamed the land of Temir (iron, in shor language), a mountainous massif bordering the Altai. Nature is fabulous here: a deep black taiga dominated by the Patyne, Bolshoi Koul-Taïga and Moustag mountains (called "ice mountain", made up of a 5 km long granite massif). Go to the Tiguirtych ridge (aerial teeth), probably the most beautiful spot, where the Verkhniï Zoub (upper tooth) culminates (2,046 m).
