Dunfermline was once the capital of Scotland! The city has a large number of historical sites, marked by its royal and monastic past. There is a royal palace, a 12th century abbey and a 15th century abbey house. In this abbey lies the body of Robert the Bruce. It is also the burial place of eleven Scottish kings and queens. The city was the birthplace of Kings James I in 1394 and Charles I in 1600, as well as the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1835. St. Margaret of Scotland is also buried here and it is possible to approach the cave where, in the 11th century, she bathed the feet of the poor.
