The interest of the Quebrada, also called Quebrada de Cafayate, lies in a succession of strange formations born from erosion, with beautiful red and orange colours. All of them are well indicated by signs and named according to their respective shapes. The first one was called El Castillo (the castle), but as you move away it ends up looking like a ship. Then the list goes on and on... El Obelisco (the Obelisk), El Fraile (the Monk), El Sapo (the Toad) and we reach El Anfiteatro, the star of the formations to be discovered. The place was once covered by an internal lake, but the plate tectonics have turned it all upside down. Its interior shape is perfectly round and the erosion continues with the wind that rushes into this amphitheatre. The sound of the amphitheatre is incredible and it sounds like the Cólon Theatre in Buenos Aires. The area is of course quite touristy with some souvenir stands and people singing to your heart's content. After this nice discovery coming from Cafayate, some other formations like Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) or El Hongo (the Mushroom) are waiting for you. But the most beautiful is over, we continue the road in the Quebrada de la Alemania (much greener) and towards the big city: Salta. A little before, in Coronel Moldes, we can stop to see the small church or go to refresh ourselves on the edge of the reservoir of Cabra Corral. Don't hesitate to locate the water points on your map, young Argentines often go there to swim for the day.
