The area is classified as a national historical park. Situated at a strategic location of the Dardanelles Strait, Gelibolu, headquarters of the French and British during the Crimean War in 1854-1855, is a small town. Its medieval fortress, Kilitbahir, was built by Mehmet the Conqueror. The Gallipoli campaign (March 1915 to January 1916) caused enormous losses to the Allied forces who had to retreat with a heavy toll. The Allied cemeteries of Gallipoli or Çanakkale can be visited, they are scattered throughout the peninsula. The signage of the monuments is unfortunately not very good.
