In summer, one of the largest bike parks in the area provides thrills for downhill mountain bike enthusiasts. Further down, the villages of Gressan and Jovençan, where the ski area is located, are strategically placed between Aosta and Pila, and the many establishments there are a good compromise for alternating a day in the mountains with a cultural visit. ThePila ski area (altitude 1,765-2,709 m) overlooks the town of Aosta, to which it is linked by an 18 km panoramic road. Situated in a large natural amphitheatre between the Pointes de la Valletta and Pointes de la Pierre and protected by the sharp summit of Mount Emilius, Pila enjoys one of the best views in the valley of Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa. It is ideally connected to the regional capital by a cable car that passes over old hamlets, meadows, woods and even vineyards! In winter, more than 70 km of ski runs for experienced skiers (72% red, 16% blue, 12% black), are groomed in dense coniferous forests down to the border ridges; with the Cogne valley, enjoy excellent snow cover thanks to its northern exposure and high altitude. Pila Ski School (Fraz. Grand Gorraz; +39 0165 52 11 14; www.scuoladiscipila.com) offers ski, telemark and snowboard lessons for adults and children
