The Chapursan Valley, which is quite isolated, is located in the far north of the country, bordering China, Afghanistan, and the Wakhan corridor. The name Chapursan would have Persian, Chi (which means "what") and Pure ("ask") roots, and could therefore be translated as "What to ask". Indeed, the valley would have been once the meeting point of merchants from South and Central Asia, who would have made it a very rich place, lacking nothing... And when we lack nothing, what more can we ask for?Very well preserved, the valley has not lost any of its authenticity. It has eleven villages, the last of which, Zood Khun, is located at an altitude of about 3,500 metres. Beyond Zood Khun is the sanctuary of the mystic Baba Ghundi, a Sufi saint from Afghanistan who reportedly had miraculous powers. It is a popular place of pilgrimage. The sanctuary is surrounded by meadows that host herds of sheep, yaks and cows in summer and, sporadically, from June to September, merchants from Afghanistan who cross the Irshad Pass with their horses, yaks and sheep to trade with the villagers of the valley.
