An ancestral city built at the end of the 10th century, Kano is the commercial capital of the region, whose age can be felt on each of its visits, since the entire architectural base dates back to the 15th century. The second largest population centre after Lagos, the capital of the state of the same name, is estimated to have a population of nearly 5 million. Any visit to Kano will be strongly linked to the Emir's personality, whether one comes to pay his respects on the occasion of a Durbar, or whether one is satisfied with an external visit to his palace and the museum facing him. We will then inevitably feel this attachment to the culture and history of the region, of which Sanusi Lamido II, a great Islamic scholar, economist and collector of books on African studies, is a fervent supporter. Kano is a low-rise city, with few buildings and relatively green. Large roundabouts arrange its alleys where you can see arabesques, exterior paintings and peaks at the corners of roofs dear to Hausa architecture, of which you will find very beautiful emblems in the city. Sometimes referred to as Tuk-Tuk city, traffic is very low compared to the other two capitals of the country.
