population: 533,000. Gulbarga, also known as Kalaburagi, lies 150 km northeast of Vijayapura and 110 km southwest of Bidar. It is locally famous for its religious buildings of various denominations: the Khwaja Banda Nawaz Dargah, the tomb of the Sufi saint Bande Nazaw, the Hindu temple Sharana Basaveshwara dedicated to the sage and philosopher of the same name, and finally its Buddha Vihar, a much more recent Buddhist temple. Other monuments of interest dotted around the town include the Haft Gumbaz, tombs of the Bahmani dynasty. But if Gulbarga is on the tourist map, it's thanks more to its imposing Kalaburagi fort.
