Kittur is a small town located about 50 km from Belagavi and 32 km from Dharwad. While it is best known for its fort, its dilapidated palace, monuments and statues also evoke the glories of the past. The fort is a testimony to the great freedom struggle waged by Rani Kittur Chennamma, the queen of the Kittur state in the 19th century, against the British East India Company. Her death was followed by multiple revolts against the British. A monument has been erected in her honor on top of a mound: a statue of Rani Chennamma on her horse, sword in hand, giving the assault.
