Founded by an Irish family named Murphys, it became one of the richest cities in Northern California during the gold rush. This charming small pedestrian town is located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park in Calaveras County. Now a coveted wine destination, it is home to many renowned vineyards, some even rivaling the Napa Valley. Stroll along the main street and taste the wonders of this small and growing village. Famous for Mark Twain's tale, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, this village was also visited by stagecoach robber Black Bart and General Ulysse S. Grant (former President of the United States).
