The coffee region is not limited to Salento and Filandia, far from it! Pijao, 31 km south of Armenia, at an altitude of 1,700 m, is a typical village of the same style, but for the time being it has remained outside the usual tourist circuits. The inhabitants live there at a different pace, the commercial notion is much less present. The landscapes are fantastic, between exuberant tropical forest and páramo. The land is ideal for growing sugar cane, bananas, lulo and especially coffee. But not just any coffee, here the small fincas produce coffee of high quality origin. The village itself is made up of beautiful houses with colorful facades and flowery balconies. The church square is pleasant, surrounded by many cafes, and the inhabitants are very friendly. Pijao is known as the only Cittaslow ("slow city") in Latin America. This international network of cities of good living, born in Italy in the 1980s, is a community committed to slowing down the pace of life for its citizens. A few years ago, Mónica Florez, an ethnologist and journalist from Pijao, was able to obtain the Cittaslow label thanks to a model of responsible tourism, imbued with the spirit of healthy living and slowness. A work engaged with small producers, restaurateurs and local craftsmen. This model of " Pueblo del buen vivir " opposes mass tourism, in order to preserve the natural, cultural and ethnographic environment of the area.
