At the foot of the Revermont mountains, Cuiseaux has always been a border town, bordering the Ain and Jura departments of the Rhône-Alpes and Franche-Comté regions. This geographical position has left its mark on the town's history and attracted the envy of many powers. Repeatedly besieged and destroyed, Cuiseaux built a 36-tower wall, of which only parts remain, at the "Porte du Verger" and its two 12th-century towers. But a stroll through the old medieval town will delight heritage enthusiasts. Cuiseaux is also the birthplace of painter Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940), a famous member of the Nabis group.
