The village is located along the Bavarian border and the Vils River, a tributary of the Lech, from which the village takes its name. It is the starting point for pleasant hikes to the ruins of Vilsegg, the former residence of the lords of Hohenweg dating back to the 13th century, or to the Alatsee lake across the border. This quiet village surrounded by nature has a population of about 1,500 year-round. Interesting fact for music lovers: a long tradition of famous violin makers, such as Dominicus Rief. Some of his work is on display in the local museum. Good place for horse riding and climbing (16 routes)
