Situated on the last slope of the watershed between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, Couches is a large rural commune (almost 20 km² with 1,300 inhabitants). Its history is linked above all to the Middle Ages, when the two districts making up the town were disputed and divided between the Kingdom of France and the Duchy of Burgundy. It's to this eventful past that we owe the many medieval remains, notably the three-storey Bajole tower, dating from the 12th century and once a dependency of the Saint-Georges priory. Also not to be missed are the 15th-century church, the Templars' house, the Guérin tower, Marguerite de Bourgogne's sumptuous château, the Saint-Georges priory and the old hospital.Couches is well worth a visit. The town also marks the boundary between the Couchois and Côte Chalonnaise vineyards, providing an opportunity to meet the producers and visit the estates. The many events held throughout the year are also very popular, such as Jazz à Couches (July 3-6, 2024), the Médiévales and the Ronde du Couchois. The only thing missing is a real tourist information point. For full information and guided tours, contact the Autun tourist office.
