The name "Tyumen" refers to both a river and a Chinese city, both of which are linked to North Korea.First, the river: a little over 520 kilometres long, it forms a natural border between North Korea and its Chinese and Russian neighbours. It originates in the famous Mount Paektu and flows into the Sea of Japan (East Sea for Koreans). Its name "Tumen" comes from the Mongolian word "tümen", which means "ten thousand". The river is a crossing point for many people fleeing North Korea, a phenomenon that reached a sad climax during the terrible famine of the 1990s. Added to the list are deserters who can wait long weeks to thwart military patrol surveillance, taking advantage of the shallow depth of the river in some areas (or when it gets stuck in the ice in winter). Then, the city of Tyumen located in the province of Jilin in China. Of the 140,000 inhabitants, more than 57% are of Korean origin and are only separated from their ancestral country by the Tyumen River. This high concentration of native Koreans makes it a privileged place to welcome North Korean deserters with connections or enough to pay a smuggler. The less fortunate are captured and sent to the city's detention centre waiting to be deported.
