Sariwon, the provincial capital halfway between Pyongyang and Kaesong, now has a population of about 300,000. Often visited by groups travelling to the DMZ, Sariwon has acquired an important position thanks to the railway line between Seoul and Sinujiu built in 1906. Since the division of the peninsula, the city has developed a light industry, mainly workshops for agricultural machinery. Sariwon is also a major educational centre with more than ten universities. Today, it is best known to visitors for its production of makkoli or makgeolli (a traditional alcohol similar to sweet and milky beer made from rice, barley or wheat) and grapes renowned as being the best in the country. As the urban area is not large and the tourist points are close to each other, it should be possible to walk, and to observe the population and daily life (shops...).
