Literally "wooden door store", the area is named after an ancient village destroyed during the Korean War. Its reputation is based on its proximity to the 38th parallel and the border with South Korea. Panmunjeon is located less than 500 metres from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). It was here that the armistice agreement between North and South was signed in 1953, ending the fighting (although officially the two countries are still at war). Here you can visit the North Korean Peace Museum, located just over a kilometre from DMZ and the last vestige of the old village.
