405 inhabitants. Estany is the highest municipality in Moianès. It stands at an altitude of 870 metres, surrounded by mountains - ranging from 900 to 1,020 metres - and valleys cut by streams and rivers. Its unique topography is the result of millions of years of geological phenomena: the clayey terrain, underground currents and heavy rainfall have transformed the Estany Valley into a watershed, subsequently forming a pond of about 300,000 square metres in size that gave its name to the city of Estany (l'étang, in French). It was completely drained in the 18th century, thanks to the construction of an underground pipeline that gave way to a mosaic of cultivated land. From Puig de la Caritat (1,017 metres above sea level), one of the most beautiful natural lookouts in the Geopark, you can see all the massifs in the region with a single glance. In the old town, not without charm with its narrow streets, the thousand-year-old monastery of Santa Maria de L'Estany, a real jewel of Catalan Romanesque art, is worth a visit.
