As early as 1865, excavations brought to light traces of a Neolithic culture of southern origin: the Chassean, improperly called Roman camp. This culture is characterized by ceramics with particular shapes and decorated with engraved geometric patterns. The series can be admired today at the Rolin Museum in Autun, the Denon Museum in Chalon and the Henri Régnier Museum at Mont Saint-Vincent. The Gallo-Romans made this site a sacred place by building a small sanctuary there during the Bronze Age (guided tours in summer). This narrow plateau, bordered by steep rocks, also offers a superb setting for hiking.
