The Candelaria River is the longest river that crosses the state of Campeche. From the Guatemalan Petén, its 400 km criss-cross the north of Chiapas and flow into the Laguna de Términos. This region was occupied since prehispanic times by the Chontal Indians, and it is on the site of Itzamkanac, the Zona Arqueológica El Tigre, that Hernán Cortès, on his way to Honduras, would have ordered in 1525 the execution of the last Aztec tlatoani , Cuauhtémoc. Along the river, your guides will show you the stone bridges of the time, now submerged under water. While the city is not very interesting, there are some refreshing places to enjoy the scenery.
