Travel Guide Castelli Di Cannero

The Castelli di Cannero are castles situated on three rocky islets: two of them include the ruins of the Rocca Vitaliana fortress, itself built on the ruins of an older castle built in the 11th and 12th centuries by the Mazzardi family. Legend has it that the Mazzardites, after their defeat, were thrown into the lake with a stone around their necks and thus drowned. It is even said that on days when the fog is thick on the lake, it is possible to see a ghost ship sailing around the castle, claiming the ancient submerged treasure. Today the island belongs to the Borromeo family.
