This district of about 30,000 and 393 km 2 offers little interest except the archeological site of Byllis. The main city, Ballsh (9,000) is the administrative and industrial center. From collaboration between Communist Albania and Maoist China, Ballsh inherited a Mausade architecture and a huge refinery still active. If the region is pretty pretty with its green valleys, it is marked by the presence of many oil wells, by moving heavy trucks down the roads and by major pollution. However, there is an effort to promote the region that could be translated into the years ahead by creating a tourist infrastructure.
