The city of Akō is known all over Japan for the events that took place there almost 320 years ago. The story begins with the quarrel between two lords, Naganori Asano, lord of Akō, and Yoshinaka Kira. Contrary to the custom that, during an altercation, both parties should be punished fairly, the Tokugawa shogunate decided to punish only the lord of Akō, who was forced to perform seppuku (a ritual form of suicide). Forty-seven rōnin decided to avenge the death of their deceased master and murdered Yoshinaka Kira, after about two years of preparation. They all committed seppuku. This story has left its mark on people's minds for the values of loyalty and sacrifice it perpetuates. It has often been reprised for kabuki and puppet theatre performances.
