population: 22,600. Located 17 km north of Margao and 28 km from Panjim. The town is home to numerous religious monuments. Mosques from the time when the region was under the control of the Bijapur Sultanate, and temples, Ponda was a refuge for Hindus fleeing Portuguese and Jesuit persecution in the 16th century. Ponda is also home to the Sahakari spice farm, recommended for budding cooks and the curious. Ponda can be the subject of a half-day excursion, which can be combined with a visit to Old Goa.
