Situated 4 kilometers to the east, the village is home to two of the island's three kouros abandoned in the 6th century B.C. (the third and largest kouros is at Apollonas). In the nearby village of Kourounohori (1 km to the northeast), there's a small museum displaying some of the site's discoveries, as well as the Frangopoulou tower, still owned by the Della Rocca family, the island's old noble family of Burgundian origin. Melanes also provides access to the magnificent 17th-century fortified Jesuit monastery of Kalamitsia, abandoned in 1949. This is located 2 km to the south along a fairly easy, unpaved path.
