Theejido Reforma Agraria is a tropical town, located halfway between Comitán (210 km) and Palenque (250 km). What it has become tells the story of an environmental success story that began in the 1980s when the government granted it a 2,500 hectare site of tropical forest. Half of it is left as is, so it is not uncommon for visitors to sleep in their huts and howler monkeys a few metres up in the branches of a chicozapote tree. Located in the southernmost part of the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve, it is also known for its wildlife, which can sometimes be seen on boat trips along the Lacantún and Tzendales rivers: howler monkeys, spider monkeys, deer, peccaries, tapirs, ocelots and jaguars, you'll already be lucky if you see the traces of them... Here, you come above all to be in contact with nature: besides the indispensable boat tours, you can take a guide to walk in the forest or go for a kayak ride on the river.
