Barentsburg is a Russian mining village of about 471 inhabitants. Today, just over 400 Russians and Ukrainians come here to work. At one time, there were as many as 1,000 Russian citizens in Barentsburg. Today, the town has remained frozen in time and this is where the interest of the visit lies. A short stopover will already give you an idea of the atmosphere that prevails here. Barentsburg seems to be anchored in another era, that of the bygone Soviet era. It is one of the largest settlements in Svalbard. Although Russian, this village has a Norwegian postcode and Norwegian telephone numbers as well
