This medieval city, which is still entirely surrounded by its ancient walls from the 14th and 15th centuries, owes the first part of its name to a local boy, the troubadour Wolfram von Eschenbach, who, along with Walther von der Vogelweide, is the most famous German lyric poet of the Middle Ages. His most famous work, the verse novel Parzival, was the basis and inspiration for Richard Wagner's last dramatic-musical work, Parsifal. This epic tells the adventures of the knight of the round table, better known in France as Perceval. Wolframs-Eschenbach, which today has about 3,000 inhabitants, has retained its medieval and Renaissance appearance to the present day. In the 13th century, the town was given to the Knights of the Teutonic Order, who ruled the town for 600 years. Most of the city's sacred and secular buildings are linked to their presence.
