Kempten was first mentioned by the Greek geographer and historian Strabo (ca. 63 B.C. to 23 A.D.) under the name Kambodunon . The history of Kempten thus goes back more than 2,000 years, to the time before the Romans settled there. Its Roman name, Cambodonum, means "castle or city at the bend of the river". Located about 45 km from the Austrian border and 65 km northeast of Lake Constance, the town now has a population of 70,000. Two of the most remarkable and unmissable sites are the archaeological park Cambodunum (APC) and the ceremonial rooms of the former residence of the prince-abbots of Kempten.
