population: 102,505. Situated on the right bank of the Brahmaputra River, Tezpur was founded by the British in 1835, but remains dating back to the 4th century show that human presence goes back a long way. Its name derives from the Sanskrit word for city of blood. In the ancient epic Mahâbhârata, Krishna is said to have fought a bloody battle here against Banasura. Formerly the capital of Assam, it now enjoys a peaceful existence. It is nonetheless considered the capital of Assamese culture. Touristically, Tezpur is of little interest, but it is a convenient stopover on the way to Arunachal Pradesh or Nameri National Park.
