Over 25% of Mizoram's population resides in its capital, a city of just under 300,000 inhabitants, a small town by Indian standards. Previously a region of Assam, Mizoram became a Union Territory in 1972, then India's 23rd state on February 20, 1987. The territory is 91% forested, and around 95% of the population is of tribal origin. These ethnic groups, known as "Mizos", have a culture that has changed little since the arrival of Catholicism in 1890. The capital has an airport with connections to Kolkata (40 min flight). A visit to the state requires an Inner Line Permit.
