The capital and largest city of the state, with a population of just over one million, is also the most important commercial hub in the region. The history of Raipur, still sometimes called Rayapur, dates back to the Maurya Empire. In the village of Chandkhuri, 27 km from the city, is the Mata Kaushalya temple, the only temple in the world dedicated to the mother of Rama. With few tourist sites, Raipur is not a must-see tourist destination for the traveler, however it can serve as a base to explore the unknown riches of Chhattisgarh and discover its ethnic minorities.
