Camarles, with a population of 3,270 (2017), is located on the edge of the Ebro delta, halfway between L'Ampolla and L'Aldea, in the Baix Ebre region. It is one of the most recent towns in Terres de l'Ebre, separated from Tortosa in 1978, although its origins date back to Iberian times. This quiet village preserves the remains of an ancient Arab castle, a circular stone tower mentioned in historical documents as early as 1150, as well as a rectangular defensive tower erected in the 13th century, the Granadella tower. Camarles lives mainly from the cultivation of rice and fruit trees, and it also has an industrial center. On the other hand, its proximity to the delta and its strategic position, between the sea and the mountains, offer the opportunity to practice a plethora of activities in the middle of nature, such as cycling along the marked routes of the Ebro Delta Natural Park or bird watching in its protected areas. More information at the tourist office (C/ Trenta-u) and at www.camarles.caFestivities. The Festes Majors dels Lligallos are celebrated at the end of June: Camarles comes alive in honor of Sant Joan, the patron saint of the village (traditional dances and bullfighting). Also, if you are in the area on July 25, do not miss the Festes Majors (procession, bulls, correfocs and popular dances).
