Xerta is a charming little village of just over 1,300 souls located in a meander of the Ebro River, about fifteen minutes north of Tortosa. Because of its proximity to the river, it has been the victim of many floods during its long history, the episode of the "great flood" of 1787 being without a doubt the most memorable. Note the 15th century dam: 370 meters and 7 meters high. The town hall of Xerta (Plaça Major, 13 - www.xerta.altanet.org) can be an interesting place to get some information.Festivities. There are two dates to remember here: the summer festival of Sant Jaume, which takes place on July 25, with bullfights, dances and popular paella by the river; and Sant Martí, Xerta's patron saint's day, which is celebrated on November 11. The village also attracts lovers of walks and nature
