Located in the Morvan region of France, the town of Autun is part of the Villes d'art et d'histoire (Towns of Art and History) network, and boasts a rich historical heritage dating back over two millennia. The town originally known as Augustodunum still preserves precious vestiges of its ancient past, of which the Autun people are very proud. Among the city's many treasures, discover the temple dedicated to the god Janus, the Porte d'Arroux and Porte de Saint-André, the open theater, the ramparts, the towers and the pyramid of Couhard. All these buildings are open to the public and illustrate the greatness of the first Roman emperor, Augustus. In the Middle Ages, Christianity left its mark on the town with the construction, from 1120 onwards, of the Saint-Lazare cathedral in the heart of the medieval quarter, which has become one of the town's main attractions. Long before Autun became industrialized, the town was shaped by the traces of the Dukes of Burgundy, Napoleon Bonaparte and other illustrious historical figures. But there's much more to Autun than its cultural heritage. The town boasts a privileged geographical location that would be a shame not to take advantage of. Take a stroll along the footpaths, enjoy the most beautiful views of the Morvan and reconnect with nature as you look out over the endless expanses.
