Originally occupied by Amerindians, Lamèque comes from the Micmac name Elmugwadasik which means "head turned sideways". The French explorer and merchant Nicolas Denys established a trading post there around 1645, but the first settler on the island was Jean-Baptiste Robichaud around 1751. The community of Lamèque is located on the island of the same name. It is one of the important destinations in the province. People come here to enjoy the fresh air, in a preserved and calm environment: immense and deserted beaches, rich fauna and flora. Located on the migratory route of many species of birds, the place is a place of predilection for ornithology.
