An ancient Samnite centre called Maloentum, Benevento changed its name after a battle won by the Romans in 275 BC. The city of Maleventum, a Latin name derived from Maloentum, and which had a negative connotation - "bad event" -, is renamed Beneventum - "good event" - in memory of their victory. Under Roman rule, the city took advantage of its strategic position on the communication routes linking Rome to the port of Brindisi. Its prosperity continued in the Middle Ages when Beneventum became a powerful Lombard duchy. The Church of St. Sophia is one of the rare testimonies of Lombard architecture and is registered with Unesco.
