Travel Guide Alpharetta

Located 30 miles north of Atlanta, Alpharetta was born after the forced exodus of Cherokee, along the Trail of Tears, in a zone called New Prospect Camp Ground (or the Methodist Camp Ground). First known as Milton, the city took its current name in 1858. This name is a variation of the name of an imaginary Indian, Alfarata, heroine of a very popular song of the th century (The Blue Juniata). For some, the name of Alpharetta is simply derived from that of the first Greek letter. Today, Alpharetta is a predominantly residential town with a Nice, which is not very charming, since many houses in the late 1800 s have been preserved. A few very pleasant restaurants are located on South Main Street and many others in Avalon's thriving commercial and Leisure Area 2 miles east. Nearby, Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, with a capacity of 12 000 people, is a major event centre in the region. Alpharetta is also known for its Downtown Farmer Market, which takes place in Old Township Street every Saturday morning from April to October.
