Nestled on top of a hill, Horta de Sant Joan is a small rural town with a certain charm. Occupied by the Muslims from the 8th century onwards, before falling under the domination of the Templar Order and later the Hospitallers, the old town, which retains the picturesque character of a medieval village, is full of historical secrets to be discovered in its steep streets, darkened porches and monuments. But if the name of Horta is not unknown to us, centuries later, it is thanks to the passage of Pablo Picasso, who sketched the beginnings of cubism there, illustrated in his paintings that paint the contours of Horta's landscape. Religious architecture enthusiasts should not miss a visit to the impressive Franciscan convent of Sant Salvador d'Horta, nestled at the foot of the Santa Bàrbara mountain, immortalized on canvas by the young Picasso. But Horta de Sant Joan is also one of the three gateways to the Els Ports Natural Park, a massif with fascinating reliefs where the southeast of Terres de l'Ebre ends. It is an ideal place for hiking, mountain biking, climbing and caving. Moreover, the town is also a stage of the Via Verda de Val de Zafán.
