Móra d'Ebre, the capital of the Ribera d'Ebre region, is located between the right bank of the river Ebro and a hill where the remains of the old medieval castle that dominated the river plain remain, and where the Carlist Wars Interpretation Center is located today. Móra d'Ebre is linked to its neighbor Móra by an arched bridge built in 1943, a true symbol of the current city, as the old iron bridge was totally destroyed during the Civil War. Close to the remains of the castle is the historical center of Plaça de Baix, which from its balcony overlooks the river, the city's first river port. Some monuments are worth a visit, such as the priory church dedicated to Sant Joan Baptista in Plaça de Baix, a building of Romanesque origin that today presents an eclectic style with its single nave covered with ribbed windows that ends in a polygonal apse; the Baroque chapel of San Jerónimo, built over a spring, and its path lined with century-old cypress trees that leads to the hermitage of Santa Madrona; or the convent of the Minims sisters and its church of the Sacred Heart, the first expiatory temple in Catalonia. In the surroundings we find two other hermitages, the hermitage of St. Mary Magdalene, and the one of the Calvary, built on a hill from where the view of the Ebro river and the city is worth a visit. In the Plaça de Dalt, you will also find the Montagut de l'Era house, with its portal and sculpted balconies, as well as the monument to Julio Antonio, a sculptor from Móra d'Ebre. Not to be missed if you visit the city in mid-July is the bi-annual festival of Móra Morisca, where the locals revive the Moorish era through markets and parades. In terms of gastronomy, you will be surprised by some inventive gastronomic restaurants.
