Alcover, formerly spelled Alcober, is a town of 5,000 inhabitants in the county of Alt Camp, crossed by a tributary of the river Francolí called Glorieta. Its picturesque town center is well worth a visit, if only to take a look at the collection of fossils housed in the Alcover Museum. Between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century, the city was also a hotbed of banditry, embodied by two rival gangs: the Morells and the Voltors. The Fira de Bandolers (second weekend of October) pays tribute to this tumultuous past. More information at the tourist office (Plaça Nova, 3) and at www.alcover.cat
