The remains of the village of La Moleta del Remei, founded between the 7th and 2nd centuries B.C., bear witness to Alcanar's Iberian origins. The city was later dominated by the Romans, then the Moors, before being conquered by the Crown of Aragon in the medieval period. It was during this period that the city was fortified with walls and defensive towers, some of which, such as the tower of Carrer Nou, are still visible today. The old town, in addition to its medieval streets, offers some historical monuments, such as the small neoclassical church dedicated to St. Michael, the Vall de la carrer del Forn cistern or the mansions of the modern era, the Casa del Marquès, the Casa dels Sunyer or the Casa O'Connor, seat of the Interpretation Center of Iberian Culture. Note that the current city is divided into three distinct entities: Alcanar, inland, Les Cases d'Alcanar and Alcanar Platja, on the coast. Les Cases d'Alcanar, which has preserved many aspects of charm and tradition, is known for its traditional gastronomy: there is no shortage of good restaurants to enjoy rice dishes, fish and seafood. In addition, agricultural production and the cultivation of fruit trees are present in the north of the town. The star product of Alcanar is the clementine! Alcanar Platja concentrates a good part of the tourist activities: its coastline has more than 10 km of beaches and coves lined with calm and transparent water. For more information, go to the tourist office, a white and blue kiosk on the seafront near the entrance to the port, or to www.alcanarturisme.com
