With more than 20,000 inhabitants, Amposta, the gateway to the Delta, is the capital of the county of Montsià. It is connected to the left bank of the river by an elegant 20th century suspension bridge, a symbol of the modern city that was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and later restored. On the banks of the Ebro, on the site of an ancient Iberian village, the remains of the medieval castle bear witness to the influence of Amposta under the Crown of Catalonia and Aragon. In the old part of the town there are some interesting modernist buildings. Balada, a tiny village facing the island of Gràcia, and Poble Nou del Delta, a traditional village with immaculate huts, both belong to the municipality of Amposta. The latter is worth a visit! It concentrates some good addresses that will suit lovers of rural tourism. To the north of the village stretches the Encanyissada lagoon, the largest in the delta, nesting point for many species of birds. Don't forget your binoculars!
