Deltebre, in a way the capital of the Delta, is located in the territory of the Baix Ebre region. The town as we know it today was born from the union of two villages, Jesús i Maria and La Cava, which were once part of Tortosa before their unification in 1981. Thus, Deltebre flourishes in the heart of the natural park, in a singular natural landscape of green rice fields, sandy beaches and lagoons, habitats of a rich ecosystem where hundreds of species of birds nest, from colonies of flamingos to purple herons. The wooden observatories installed in the area will delight the curious and the birdwatching enthusiasts. The region is also crisscrossed with many marked trails suitable for walking or biking. For this, do not miss the information center and its eco-museum, a source of information on the delta and its environment where you can get maps of hiking routes. In addition, the Camí natural (natural path) between Tortosa and Deltebre, a continuation of the Via Verda that begins in Tortosa, is a popular bicycle touring route. From the Platja de la Marquesa to the Punta del Fangar lighthouse, there are beautiful dune landscapes that served as a backdrop for the film Sahara (2005). At the eastern end of the Delta is Riumar with its languid beach, north of the mouth of the river, an area that includes three natural sites of great interest: the lagoon of El Garxal, the island of Sant Antoni and the island of Buda.
