Ittoqqortoormiit or Illoqortormiut (literally "big house") is one of the most isolated cities in Greenland because of its remoteness but also because of the ice that is omnipresent along the coast which does not help the development of communications. In 1822, the Arctic explorer and whaler William Scoresby was the first to map the area and gave his name to the fjord formerly known as Scoresby. The town was founded in 1925 by Ejnar Mikkelse who brought Inuit settlers with him in order to impose a little more Danish influence in the region threatened with annexation by Norway, but above all to provide more favourable hunting grounds for the locals following a rapid increase in the population at Tasiilaq.
