Located 40 km north of the Arctic Circle, Sisimiut (literally "the place near the foxholes") is the second largest city in Greenland with 5,571 inhabitants. The Danes first settled here in the 1720s as a whaling station under the name of Holsteinsborg and under the aegis of missionary Hans Egede (the founder of Nuuk). In 1801, a smallpox epidemic decimated the population of Sisimiut and surrounding villages. Also an educational and cultural centre, several vocational and general schools are based in Sisimiut as well as the beautiful cultural centre Taseralik. From a touristic point of view, Sisimiut is especially known for its famous trek called Arctic Circle Trail.
